Good to know

Before you use it

  • A company with several share classes has a row for each ticker, such as GOOGL and GOOG for Alphabet. CIK, the SEC's company ID, ties them together.
  • Company names and industry titles are exactly as registered with the SEC, often in capital letters. Industry is the SIC code and title.
  • FilerCategory reflects size for SEC reporting; large accelerated filers have the largest public float. Exchange is empty for 172 tickers the SEC lists without one.
  • IncorporatedIn is a two-letter code for U.S. states (most companies are in DE, Delaware) and a country name otherwise.
  • This is reference data, not investment advice.
  • In every format, dates are written as yyyy-MM-dd, and yes/no values as true or false. An empty value means nothing was recorded.

Where it comes in handy

What you can build with it

  • Finance apps. Look up a company by ticker, or a ticker by company.
  • Joining SEC data. Use CIK to pull filings and financials from EDGAR.
  • Screening. Group companies by industry, exchange or headquarters.
  • Forms and watchlists. Check that a ticker someone types is real.
